My Thoughts

"People of the world don't look at themselves, and so they blame one another".  - Rumi

Working privately allows me to take the time to more authentically and holistically work with individuals to provide a safe and honest space for reflection, connection and growth.   In our day to day lives this space to reflect rarely exists making in near impossible to process through our behaviours, thoughts, attitudes, motivations and desires in any meaningful way.  Therapy gives us this space and allows us this time.

I've included a small section on reflection, connection and growth below to better expand on my reasons for finding each so important.

Reflection

Reflection is about careful thought.  It gives the brain an opportunity to pause amidst the chaos, untangle and sort through observations and experiences, consider multiple possible interpretations and create meaning.  This meaning in turn becomes learning. The most useful reflection involves the conscious consideration and analysis of beliefs and actions for the purpose of learning.  It allows you to look naturally at your thoughts, feelings, emotions and actions with interest and curiosity. This in itself can lead to powerful growth, positivity and happiness. Reflection is an awareness that can be applied to your physical, emotional, spiritual and mental levels.   Reflection is the ability to become your own inner witness.

Learning is crucial to growth.  So in essence, reflection is an essential skill for personal growth and like all skills it needs to be learnt and practiced for it to be effectively used in our life. There is an infinite space for self reflection inside us and regular, consistent self-direction, can deepen our process of personal, spiritual growth and transformation.

Connection

We are inherently social creatures.  As far back as we can trace humans we have traveled, hunted, and thrived in social groups.  We are profoundly social and we are wired at a subconscious level to want to create connections with others.  It’s one of our core psychological needs.  The moment we are born we already yearn to build a relationship and as we grow up these first relationships will reverberate all throughout our lives

Even though these human connections can look different for each of us research has  shown that these connections can ultimately lower anxiety and depression, help us regulate our emotions, lead to higher self esteem and empathy and improve our immune systems.  Studies have also shown that being connected decreases our risk of suicide, with relationships playing a crucial role in protecting a person against both suicidal thoughts and behaviours.

Unfortunately the research is also showing us that loneliness is on the rise with one study going as far as saying that this lack of human connection can be more harmful to your health than obesity, smoking and high blood pressure.  Feeling connected, especially in an increasingly isolated world, is more important than ever.

But what does connection look like?

Social connection doesn’t necessarily mean physically being present with people in a literal sense, but someone’s subjective experience of feeling understood and connected to others. Its not just about the numbers either it’s about the quality of your connections and how they contribute to happiness and positivity in your life.  It’s a feeling of closeness or belonging either to other individuals or to a group of people and it’s about developing strong ties with trustworthy people.

At it’s core the more connected you are the more enriched your life becomes.

My work with families has demonstrated all that the research has shown.  A lack of connections, as a major contributor to poor mental health, is no secret to anyone who has worked in this area. It’s my hope that through this space I can assist people on their journey to connect and cultivate deeper and more satisfying relationships.

Growth

Growth is a transformational process in which improvements are made in your physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social or financial state.  It’s a process of improving habits, behaviour, actions and reactions.

Sometimes, problems and difficulties are the triggers that awaken the desire to grow and lead to changes in our lives.

Sometimes you read an inspiring book, watch a movie or are motivated by someone around you.

Whatever the motivator, the desire for personal growth can lead to the discovery of new paths that allow you to

make changes in your life that expand your knowledge and self  awareness, improve current skills, and develop new ones.

My desire is to assist people to grow in all aspects of their lives. It’s my hope that I can support people to look at themselves with an open, unbiased mind so that they may live more satisfying, and meaningful lives.

We are all individual and as such a universal strategy for growth and development can’t exist. Each pathway is a personalised journey but together we can find a way.….
